Art Class by Ms. Michelle Week #1 ( July 2nd-6th )

Friday was a complete blast!! All 8 girls, yes girls, including Caitlin who is 4, had a great time! My 7 year old son Sean was there but not has a student he was my helper! He kept our puppy Buddy upstairs and happy.

Starting off the afternoon, each girl painted a moon using warm colors. While the moons dried in the blazing sun, everyone continued on to the night sky filling their paper with moving cool color lines of metallic and regular tempera paint. During snack we listened to Starry Night at Destination Modern Art, a site from the MOMA: http://www.moma.org/interactives/destination/destination.html .
We discussed the calmness of the lines of the town in the Middle ground and the motion of the lines of the sky in the background. Using construction paper, we created parts of our own town. Finally everything was glued together just in time to go home!!  Thank you to everyone, I really enjoyed having your children as art students this week!

Sorry I missed taking pictures of G and F as they left!

Art Class by Ms. Michelle (Week #1) July 2nd-6th

Monday we looked at a video of Eric Carle reading his most famous book: The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Here is the link:  http://eric-carle.com/ec_reads_vhc.html

After the video introduction, we looked closely at how Eric Carle creates his own paper for his collage work he uses as the illustrations of his books. Next, students created their own texture and printed paper using layers of paint and gadgets.  This was the first day of class so I didn't take a lot of pictures!  During snack I read The Lonely Firefly and continued to notice the awesome textures used for different objects such as clothing, fur of animals etc. He also uses uses different types of line to create his
illustration such as in the Fireworks:

Tuesday the paper was used to create our own Firefly Collages. Scraps were used to make a "Little Owl Lost" Collage.

Looking Forward to Begin ART LESSONS this Monday!!!
Here is what I have in store for the youngsters.....

MONDAY will be Eric Carle Paper Designing. After learning a little about Eric Carle (some of the older kids already know a lot about him ), the kids will experiment with paint and gadgets ( marker tops, sticks, etc. and even monster trucks) to add texture to the wet painted paper.
While the Textured paper dries, we will read The Very Lonely Firefly by Eric Carle and have a blast creating a firework line drawing using Metallic Gel Sticks that shimmer when you add water !!! So fun!

TUESDAY we will continue with Eric Carle and create our own Firefly Collage with the paper
created the day before.

WEDNESDAY-  DAY OFF TO CLEAN!!

THURSDAY we will dive into Starry Night! After a short book about this wonderful artist, we will take a look at Starry Night and create a line study using Metallic Pastels on Black paper.

Summer Art Camp by Ms. Michelle

With Summer quickly approaching I have one thing to say... It's time to get more creative!! I've worked all school year long with children with many different abilities in art. The age I teach five, six and seven year olds is wonderful!  They are so naturally creative!! Not only do they produce a great piece of art, but the process of making it is so important to their self esteem. As they move from start to finish learning new skills, it's the confidence they gain while creating that's  most important to me as their art teacher. At this age in particular, it's so important to help mold their little egos! My job is not only to have them take something home in the end, learn something new, but leave with a positive feeling of self. Here are some of my favorites I've done this past school year...take a look:

Memorial Day Weekend 2012

Sean on a Hunt for Craw Fish

Hunting for Craw Fish takes a very quite steady hand. The reflection in the water is my favorite part of this photo!

Beaver Point

This is beaver point, We often hear the beaver swimming around and flapping their tails!
Such a beautiful and peaceful place. One of my favorite spots to go with the kids.
